Three of our esteemed teachers, Mr. Mohammad Bin Ahmed, Mr. Khawaja Shahid, and Mr. Sayedain also attended the event and were very delighted to have met their former students.
The topic Mr. Asad Umar spoke on was “Civil-Military Relationship and its impact on Pakistan Economy”. The salient points of his talk were:
- The relationship between the civilian leadership and the military establishment is crucial to have mutual trust and understanding with both operating within the bounds of their constitutional limits.
- At the end of the first 13-year military rule Pakistan suffered from the separation of its eastern wing, and for 66 years of its existence, till 2013, the transfer of power was never peaceful.
- Mutual distrust and fragile institutional mechanisms were the impeding factors in the relationship between civil leadership and military establishment.
- The pivotal role of the military is to safeguard the geographical boundaries of Pakistan, leading the counter-terrorism efforts, playing a lead role in intelligence and counter-intelligence and working with the scientific community to advance the technological/industrial capabilities of the nation.
- With the building of trust with the military establishment, the civil leadership can steer the country out of the economic quagmire and the indicators are good, for example, we are seeing the decrease in the current account deficit.
6. Without the help of national institutions, we cannot overcome the huge challenges that the nation is facing.
